When Should You Worry about Mouth Sores?

A woman suffering from mouth sores. Most of us have dealt with a mouth sore at some point, usually developing on the inner cheeks, gums, or tongue. These sores can be very painful and irritating, especially when you drink or eat or they are exposed to temperature extremes.

A variety of causes may be behind your mouth sore, and in most cases, they are perfectly harmless.

However, if your sore lasts for two weeks or longer and doesn't seem to be going away, you may want to talk to your dentist.

Viruses and Mouth Sores

Do you suffer from cold sores? If so, you might not realize that these outbreaks are actually the result of a virus known as herpes simplex. Cold sores are highly contagious, so it is important that you take care to not pass the virus on to other people. They will initially appear as blisters before crusting over and disappearing.

Illnesses and Mouth Sores

There are some medical conditions that can also produce mouth sores. If you are suffering from a cold and develop sores, this could be the cause. However, if you get mouth sores frequently, something more sinister might be at play, such as an autoimmune disorder.

Oral Cancer and Mouth Sores

Arguably the biggest concern when it comes to mouth sores is oral cancer. If you have sores that don't heal in 10-14 days, it is important to have them checked out by your dentist.

If it is oral cancer, the success of treatment will hinge on how early you start to treat the condition. Regular dental visits can also help to look for changes in your mouth that might indicate cancerous tissue.

If ever you experience a sore that you find concerning, contact our office today for an evaluation.
