Cracked Tooth = More Problems
A cracked tooth is no fun, causing sharp pain as you chew, sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages, and even ongoing pain. If you visit our office complaining of tooth pain, Dr. Myers will x-ray your teeth, determine where the problem tooth is, and diagnose what needs to be done to resolve your problem and your pain. The recommended treatment will depend on the severity of the crack and the pain you are experiencing. If the pain occurs when chewing, Dr. Myers may recommend a crown or an onlay to restore the tooth. If your pain is persistent and coupled with sensitivity to cold and heat, it is likely that the nerve is involved and a root canal may be the treatment required. If the crack is severe and an infection is present, your tooth may require extraction.
If you choose to delay treatment, even minor cracks can worsen. Teeth, unlike bones, do not heal and restorative treatment should be done as soon as possible to avoid further issues.
Dr. Myers may recommend a root canal followed by a crown to restore the tooth. The root canal will focus on removing the affected pulp (the nerve and connective tissues), in turn easing your pain. Local anesthesia will be used during the procedure to ensure your comfort. The root canal procedure and restorative dental crown are considered the most successful long term treatment in these cases.
