Protecting Your Teeth When Morning Sickness Hits

Morning sickness is typically the part of a pregnancy all women worry about. Sometimes it is barely there, while other times it is the only thing you can think about all day and all night.

Morning sickness may not be something that you can fight off very much, but you can fight off the damage that it can do to your teeth.

Instead of letting the vomit's acids cause your teeth irreparable damage, there are a few things you can do to help your smile come out with as little damage as possible.

How to Keep Your Teeth Safer from Morning Sickness

The first thing you need to do when battling morning sickness is to make sure you rinse your mouth out with water after you vomit. The acid could sit on your teeth and boost the chances of decay tremendously if left there, but water can help neutralize the vomit's effects. Next, you should avoid brushing your teeth immediately afterwards. You want your mouth to come back to a neutral pH before brushing. Ideally, wait about one hour.

Brushing your teeth with your finger and toothpaste can help, too, since the acids could be causing your teeth to soften slightly. Finally, using a mouthwash that does not have any alcohol can help. You should swish a bit around your mouth following an episode of vomiting, so it can help keep your teeth protected from acid's ill effects.

If your morning sickness is bad, make sure you see your dentist regularly. You want to make sure that he or she is able to keep a close eye on the health of your teeth during that tenuous time. If you can't get your morning sickness under control, you can also speak to your doctor about anti-nausea medications you can safely take during pregnancy.
