The Fracture Potential for People with Bruxism

Bruxism is when you bite down and clench your teeth. This often happens when a person is stressed out or sleeping, sometimes both.

Bruxism puts a large amount of pressure on your teeth and can cause your teeth to strain to remain strong.

The more you bite down, the more likely you are to have fractures in your teeth that can make it to where you lose teeth altogether. If you suffer from bruxism, you need to speak with your dentist about ways of stopping the clenching.

Stopping Clenching so You Do Not Fracture Your Teeth

There are a few simple things you can do to try and stop clenching your teeth. First, you can try and alleviate some of your stress. The more stressed out you are, the more likely you are to clench your teeth.

Wearing an oral appliance is another option to stop you from clenching your teeth. Your dentist would need to fit you for this, so you would have to go in and see them about the problem. Finally, you can also try avoiding stimulants like caffeine and nicotine, plus avoid alcohol. These can do a number on your body, and it could become your automatic reaction to clench your teeth when exposed to these.

If you have tried these options and still find yourself clenching your teeth, then you need to speak with your dentist immediately. Also, if you notice yourself clenching and notice a sharp pain in any of your teeth, you need to go in right away.

You may already have a fractured tooth that needs to be tended to. It is never a good idea to clench down on your teeth for any reason other than chewing, so make sure to do what you can to stop the practice sooner, rather than later.
