Invisalign®

At Myers Dental, we offer various common cosmetic dentistry procedures. Invisalignimage_2149732_right is the virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth without braces. The Invisalign system uses a series of clear, removable aligners to move your teeth over time to give you the smile you deserve. Your Invisalign treatment will consist of a series of aligners that you switch out about every two weeks. Each aligner is individually manufactured with exact calculations to gradually shift your teeth into place. You can remove Invisalign aligners to eat, drink, brush, and floss or for special occasions. Invisalign is vitually invisible so hardly anyone will know that you are straightening your teeth. Even before your Invisalign treatment is finished, your teeth alignment will improve and you'll be enjoying the benefits of a better smile.

The Invisalign® Procedure

Getting started with the Invisalign system takes an hour-long appointment in which B.J. Myers DDS takes multiple impressions of your teeth. These impressions are then sent to the state-of-the-art Invisalign lab where they create custom-made trays specifically for you.

The trays arrive back to our office about two weeks after the initial impressions appointment. You then begin your treatment by wearing the custom-made trays as often as you possibly can. The beauty of the Invisalign system is that the trays are so unnoticeable! However, they can be easily removed when eating or for a very special occasion. It should be stated that the best results and the shortest amount of treatment time is achieved when the trays are worn very consistently all day and all night.

You will be seen by B.J. Myers DDS once every four weeks until treatment is concluded, and the desirable effects are achieved. These appointments are very quick, only lasting about 30 minutes each. You will be given two sets of trays every time you come to this appointment. You will wear one set for two weeks, and then begin the second set for the following two weeks. The trays progressively straighten little by little until you have the beautiful smile you deserve. The length of treatment time is dependent on the amount of straightening needed and the compliability of the patient. Typically, patients finish treatment anywhere from 12 to 24 months.

Side Effects of Invisalign®

While Invisalign is probably the least invasive type of orthodontic treatment, patients may still experience some soreness. This usually occurs when starting a new set of trays and begins to dissipate as your teeth start to move to fit the trays. Dr. Myers will typically recommend taking a few Advil to help with the discomfort.

The trays are clear so caution must be taken to make sure they are not accidentally thrown away with your lunch! This has happened, and we recommend placing the trays in the proper carrying case when not in your mouth. Also, be careful not to leave the trays where a pet can reach them. Pets love to kiss you and if given the chance will destroy your trays because they smell like you.

After Invisalign®: Retainers

After your Invisalign treatment is finished, it is imperative to have a retainer made in order to keep your teeth their straightest! The retainer is usually made of a similar clear material as the other Invisalign trays, but is made to last years instead of just weeks. It is recommended by your dentist that you wear the retainers consistently as much as possible. Most people wear them throughout the night and if possible during the day. The more you wear them, the better your results will last for years and years. Teeth like to move back to where they originally started if you do not take active measures to keep them in place. It is recommended you wear a retainer for the remainder of your life, however you can gradually decrease the amount of time you wear it as time goes on.

When seeing your dentist for your regular check-ups and cleanings, feel free to bring your retainer to have it checked for cracks or how it is fitting. Also, the hygienist would also be happy to give it a good cleaning in the ultrasonic machine to keep it fresh and free of bacteria.
