Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are tiny titanium posts used to replace the roots of your teeth and hold crowns in place. Each dental implant consists of a screw-like post that your dentist places into your jawbone beneath the gap left by a missing tooth, a custom-crafted color-matched crown, and an abutment piece to hold the two together.

Titanium is a biocompatible metal, meaning that it integrates with your bone during the healing process. This process is called osseointegration, and it allows the implant to act exactly like one of your bones. It remains sturdy and allows you to use your new crowns as if they were your natural teeth.

What is the dental implant placement process?

Placing dental implants is a lengthy process with many long-term benefits that are worth the work and the wait. The team takes X-rays of the inside of your mouth to view the density of your jawbone and look for any structural abnormalities that might pose a challenge.

Even if you don’t have adequate bone in your jaw, the team may be able to offer you a bone graft to add more bone tissue.

Under anesthesia, sedation, or both, your dentist makes an incision in your gums to access your jawbone. They remove any part of the tooth that remains below the gum line before screwing the implant into the bone. You wait for several months while the implant fuses with your bone.

At the next appointment, your dentist makes a new incision over the implant and attaches the abutment piece. In some cases, the abutment piece is already attached when the implant is placed, and this second appointment isn’t necessary.

Two weeks later, you return to Myers Dental for your crown to be placed over the implant. The team takes impressions of your mouth and the abutment beforehand to ensure that the crown fits and looks natural in its permanent place.
