Invisalign Q & A

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign is a modern solution to crooked teeth. While metal braces were once the only available orthodontic option, patients found them to be difficult to hide, bulky, and irritable to the inside of their mouth. With Invisalign, you can align your teeth without many of the setbacks of braces.

The Invisalign system is custom-designed to fit your needs. The Myers Dental team uses digital imaging to make a 3D model of your teeth that they can manipulate on a computer. They use the rendering in the making of your custom, clear plastic aligners that fit over your teeth.

Each aligner in the series pushes your teeth a little closer to perfect alignment. As long as you wear your aligners for at least 20 hours per day or more, and progress to the next aligner every two weeks, your plan stays on track. During your time with Invisalign, you visit Myers Dental just once every four weeks for a 30-minute appointment.

Can Invisalign fix my teeth?

The team at Myers Dental views the position of your teeth and may take X-rays to see below your gumline. You must have all of your adult teeth to get Invisalign. You can use it as a teenager as long as you can stay diligent about wearing your aligners and changing them as often as your dentist tells you to.

Like braces, Invisalign is designed to treat many different issues with misalignment. Invisalign might help your case if you have:

  • Visible spaces between teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Open bite
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite

If you generally think your teeth don’t look straight, but it isn’t one of the issues listed, the team may still be able to fix your teeth with a customized Invisalign plan.

Will I need to wear a retainer after my Invisalign treatment?

Once you finish your complete series of Invisalign aligners, your dentist gives you a retainer for years so you can keep your teeth in their new position. Teeth are prone to drifting, and they’ll want to go back to their old position once the pressure from the aligners is off. Invisalign retainers look a lot like the aligners, but they’re set in the end position and don’t add any new pressure.

The team at Myers Dental recommends wearing your retainer as much as possible and as regularly as you can. That’s not to say you can’t enjoy your new life without constantly wearing aligners, but you should at least sleep with it every night. You can gradually reduce the amount of time you wear your retainer as time goes on.
